The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe

“The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe” is coming to Charlottetown. The premiere production of The Prince Edward Island Conservatory Theatre brings Jane Wagner’s award winning play “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe” in for a landing this April. Signs” was a Tony award winning vehicle for Laugh In’s star Lily Tomlin and Ms. Tomlin herself helped kick the PEI production into high gear.

Duncan McIntosh, Artistic Director of the Prince Edward Island Conservatory Theatre, notes: “This is one of the funniest and most uplifting plays I have ever seen, so I am delighted to direct it as the first production of the PEI Conservatory Theatre. It opened on Broadway 20 years ago this fall, and Lily and Jane agreed that this new production with Laurie is a great anniversary present -  the jokes, characters and insights are still relevant and hilarious.”

“Signs” stars the multi talented Laurie Murphy. Ms Murphy’s inhabits 14 different characters ranging from Trudy, a New York City bag lady who converses with aliens, to Paul, a health club addict who contends “I miss the disco scene, man. I feel about the disco days what the hippies must feel about Woodstock”, to Judith, a housewife who’s found “the answer” and wants to share it with semi-non-orgasmic women everywhere!

Ms. Murphy has been embraced by Island audiences for her work with The Drill Queens, The F.I.G.H.T Club, and Late Night at the Mack. She is thrilled to step into Ms. Tomlin’s shoes.

“Signs” production team combines the talents of director Duncan McIntosh and producer, Pam Stevenson, with Production Assistant Jenna MacMillain, Bill vanAsperen of Maritime Mediaworks & Motion Pictures for “Signs” Audio Visual Design, and the Shaw Festival’s Paul Matheson for the Lighting Design. Ms. Murphy’s wardrobe has been created by Mindy Walker.

The PEI Conservatory Theatre has formed partnerships with community organizations to produce an hilarious evening of theatrical fun. Proceeds from “The Search for Signs” will benefit Aids PEI, Beyond the Bridge Collective, the Writer’s Guild of PEI , Team Diabetes and the Volunteer Resource Centre.
