Please send a message to Prime Minister Martin

Dear Gerry:

Over the past few weeks, thousands of Canadians have written to Prime Minister Martin to urge his government to build a new CBC firmly rooted in communities across the country.  At the same time, we have brought pressure to bear on CBC management to respect its mandate under the Broadcasting Act to serve the special needs of Canada’s regions.

Together, weve created tremendous pressure thats hard to ignore.  And our efforts are paying off!

Just last week, a local/regional strategy plan dated February 2nd was released by Heritage Minister Liza Frulla. You can find a copy on our web site.  We think it’s a good plan and if Ottawa funds it, CBC radio and television coverage of local communities will greatly improve over the next three years. It’s a plan that will repair the damage of a decade of cuts that have reduced our national public broadcaster to a “Toronto Broadcasting Corporation”.

But we must keep the pressure up.  With the federal budget scheduled for February 23rd, decision day is only a few weeks away.  We must act quickly to urge Ottawa to support CBCs local and regional broadcasting plan.

Please take a moment to visit FRIENDS’ website at:

where you can send a message to the Prime Minister urging him to fund the plan.  All you have to do is follow the easy steps and your message will be delivered straight to the Prime Minister.  And then tell your friends. We need Canadians to stand up for their own communities across Canada.

Please join me in driving the point home in Ottawa that CBCs grassroots needs new investment.

Yours sincerely,

Ian Morrison
