OneLight Theatre Lights the Stage Coast to Coast!

OneLight Theatre would like to invite you to its latest production, an original adaptation of Bahram Beyzaie’s Death of Yazdgerd translated by Shahin Sayadi which opens October 4th.

The performance will debut in Halifax at the Neptune Studio stage from October 4th to 15th and will tour west to the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver from October 18th to 23rd.

In the turmoil of the Arab invasion of Persia, the doomed King Yazdgerd disappears, only to be found sometime later, dead, in the house of a poor miller.  As the king’s ministers and spiritual advisors attempt to understand what has happened, a variety of plausible stories emerge from the miller, his wife, and daughter, who are trying to exculpate themselves.  As each member of the family takes turns describing, from the king’s perspective, what occurred, it becomes clear that both the mother and the daughter were victims of sexual violence at the hands of the king.  To add to the confusion of events, the king is now, and has always been masked; no one, including his closest advisors, can be sure that the dead man is actually the king, or that the man claiming to be the miller is not, in fact, Yazdgerd.  Throughout the play the concept of invasion serves as a thematic foundation.  Persia has been invaded by Islamic forces; the miller’s house has been invaded by the king; the wife and daughter have been physically invaded, and even the masked personage of the king has not been untouched.

Some of the artists involved in the development of this new work are Shahin Sayadi, Marty Burt, Janice Jackson, Kevin Curran, Dawn Farrington, Jake Dambergs, Miya Turnbull, Pasha Ebrahimi, Anna MacLean, Pip Bradford, Dr. Roberta Barker and Dr. Colin Mitchell.

Ticket prices are $15 for students, seniors and general admission tickets reserved in advance and $18 at the door with a PWYC on Wed. Oct. 5th at 8pm.

Tickets can be reserved by calling: (902) 429-7070 in Halifax or (604) 689-0926 in Vancouver.
