Letter from Emily

Hello Everyone!
Well, I think I am long overdue for a bit of a catch-up on the life of Emily e-mail.
Life in Chicago is great.  The city fits me like a glove.  I have three jobs which include front-of-house staff at The Goodman Theatre, teaching an afterschool math and english program in the Projects, and finally selling books at the largest Borders in the US across from Oprah’s home!  If I am not at work, I am probably on a bus or on the el going to one of these jobs!

However, I do find time for lots of fabulous movies and shows, dinners at a myriad of ethnic restaurants and of course, Magnificent Mile shopping!!!  I have had some great experiences here already-  including, sitting behind Arthur Miller and Tony Award-winning director Robert Falls during the dress rehearsal for Arthur Miller’s new play, Finishing the Picture.  Also, Brian Dennehy and Matthew Modine both flirted with me this past fall and, Linda Lavin likes my shoes.  At Borders, I waited on the famous chef Art Smith and told him that he sure looked a lot like the man on the cover of the books he was buying- he replied that that was because he was the man on the cover!  (He is one of Oprah’s favorite chef’s!)  As for shows, I saw Bryn Terfel in Don Giovanni at the Lyric Opera and am going to Robert Altman’s new opera, The Wedding, in January.  Caroline Hewson is flying to Chicago to join me- I can’t wait!  I also saw Rfus Wainwright in concert (fabulous) and a concert version of Sunday in the Park with George at the Ravinia Festival with Michael Cerveris and Audra MacDonald (absolutely amazing!).

As for my home, I live in the sweetest apartment in the city.  It is in a great neighbourhood and is just a few minutes from the Loop.  My bus ride to work in the morning includes a drive along Lake Michigan and views of the most beautiful homes and parks in the city.  And, the cats really enjoy looking out the window all day onto busy city life!

I am keeping busy with lots of friends- some old friends from university days- but, I miss everyone on the Island.  I am especially homesick for the Island right now.  I wish I could pop up to see all of you.  I hope to come early next fall for a visit.

This next year is going to be a busy one.  My goal is to be invited to Oprah’s house for dinner.  With the way things are going, I don’t think that this is too crazy.  Who knows!!  I am keeping up with my writing through playwriting classes and I plan on doing quite a bit more of it in the New Year- including working towards getting published and produced.  To my dismay, however, I have hardly sung a note in the four months since my arrival.  I must remedy this soon.  But, Chicago does not seem to have the wonderful choirs that exist on PEI!  Wish me luck.

So, happy holidays to all!  And, have a grand 2005.  I look forward to any news from the Island- please keep in touch.

Lots of Love,
