GSNS - Patience

Dear Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Nova Scotia Supporter,

We are pleased to offer you the first choice of seats for the upcoming production of Patience - our 28th annual Spring production. Patience will run at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium May 12-14. Performances will also be staged at the Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro on the Victoria Day weekend, and at King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal on May 28.

As a follow-up to last year’s critical success, The Gondoliers, we are pleased that many of last year’s cast and production crew are back; as well, some talented newcomers and soloists from previous productions are joining us. We are excited to be working with a new Artistic Director, Garry Williams; Earl Fralick is again our Music Director and Conductor.

Patience was Gilbert and Sullivan’s sixth collaboration (following the Pirates of Penzance), being first performed in England, on April 23, 1881. It had a very good run of 578 performances, and was the first of the operettas to be staged in the new Savoy Theatre, claimed to be the first theatre to be equipped with electric lighting.

Patience is a musical comedy satirizing people who carry a fad or fashion to the extreme, in this case a love of art and poetry (aestheticism). The plot revolves around the infatuation of the ladies of the village (“twenty lovesick maidens”) with a false poet, Bunthorne, who himself is love with Patience-an innocent village milkmaid. The Dragoon Guards, the “gentlemen” of the town, are not amused. Don’t miss an evening of great music, choreography and humour.

To reserve your seats before they go on sale to the public please ensure that your orders are received before April 22. The sooner you place your order, the closer we can match your request to an available seat. We have enclosed a ticket-order form, the Cohn seating plan, and a donation form (on the back of this letter); please note that we are unable to fill mail orders after April 22. Your ticket purchases and donations allow us to continue to present quality theatre in Nova Scotia. We thank you again for your support, and we look forward to seeing you in the Patience audience.

Yours sincerely,

Leo Weniger, Publicity Chair
