The Confederation Centre of the Arts, in association with the The School of Performing Arts at Holland College, is holding auditions for ACTORS and MUSICIANS for the upcoming production of WIZARD OF OZ. The beloved family musical play will be presented on the Homburg Stage at the Confederation Centre of the Arts December 6th   through 15th, 2012.

The play will begin rehearsals on-or-about November 12th, 2012 and will include daytime, evening and weekend rehearsals. A rehearsal schedule will be made shortly after casting is complete and will consider commitments and obligations of the cast. WIZARD OF OZ will be directed by Wade Lynch and co-directed by Catherine O’Brien with Donna Garner as musical Director and Julia Suave as choreographer.

ACTORS of all ages and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. The three key roles of DOROTHY, GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH and THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST have been filled by professional actors. ALL other roles remain open and will be filled by non-professional, unpaid players including Holland College students and community players.


Sunday, September 23rd MUSICIANS

We are delighted to offer performance opportunities for amateur and aspiring musicians to take non-paying positions as part of our WIZARD OF OZ orchestra. The score calls for string, reed and brass instruments, percussion, keyboard and synthesizer players. Please bring portable instruments with you as well as a prepared piece of music. You may also be asked to sight-read from the score

Monday, September 24th – ACTORS

Auditioners are asked to prepare a memorized monologue and a song from the Musical Theatre genre, and may be asked to dance or move in groups. You may also be asked to read scenes from the play. Please bring sheet music in the proper key. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring along a photo and resume if possible.

Available roles include:

Aunt Em: the aunt of Dorothy Gale, and wife of Uncle Henry. A Kansas farmer’s wife, who is no stranger to the rigors of hard work and hard living. Down to earth, and plain in her dress and her ways, and with a genuine affection for her niece and her husband. Non-singing.

Uncle Henry: Dorothy’s Uncle, and guardian. Good hearted, and plain-speaking, but not simple minded. A hardworking Kansas farmer, and affectionate family-man. Non-singing.

Hunk/Scarecrow: Wants nothing more than to get a brain, which he’s convinced he lacks. despite this, he is plucky and clever in a pinch. Singing & dancing required.

Hickory/Tin Man: Desperate for a heart, The Tin man joins Dorothy’s journey to see the Wizard. Exceedingly charming, and thoughtful. A kind-hearted romantic. Singing and some dance required.

Zeke/ Cowardly Lion: Full of Bravado, despite being convinced he’s a craven coward. Nonetheless, a true-blue friend, who proves himself when push comes to shove. Should Move well. Some singing and good comedic skills required.

Professor Marvel/Wizard:  Accidental ruler of the land of OZ,  who happens to be an ordinary man from Kansas, and a former circus magician. Verbose, articulate and prone to oration. Charming, and kind-hearted, despite being something of a professional charlatan. Non-Singing.

Munchkins: The little people of Munchkinland will be played (at least mostly) by children. Group singing, and coordinated movement required. Dance experience a plus. There are some featured roles among the munchkins, such as The Mayor Of Munchkin City, The Coroner, The Lollipop Guild, and The Lullaby league. 

Additionally Some Munchkin Childre will double as..

• Flying Monkeys: Minions of the Wicked Witch of the West. The monkeys do not speak or sing, but will most likely be double-cast as Munchkins. Nonetheless, non-singers will be considered.

• Poppies and snowmen

• Jitterbugs and Ghosts

Citizens of Oz: The Citizens of Oz are the adult chorus of the show. Singing and movement required. Some Ozians will also be featured dancers, and some will likely double as The Winkies (Palace guard to the Wicked Witch of the West). Adults may also be used in featured munchkin roles.

General Note: We are not looking for actors to impersonate or re-create the great performances from the film version of The Wizard of Oz. However, we are looking for actors who can approximate the energy, comedic panache, and breadth of character.
