A Home, Thanks to Terry

Terry Pratt has shown that he is a generous fellow, a very generous man indeed.  But he has also shown, once again, his commitment and initiative to provide leadership within ACT.

Terry Pratt has shown that he is a generous fellow, a very generous man indeed.  But he has also shown, once again, his commitment and initiative to provide leadership within ACT.

We’re talking about The Beach House* now ACT’s full-time headquarters.

Year after year the people who make ACT’s shows happen have found that the biggest and most frustrating difficulty has been the lack of a space where we could construct the sets, collect the costumes, keep the left-over materials, store the reusable set pieces and costumes.  Now we’ve got that space.  It will even give us a pretty good spot for running rehearsals and holding meetings.  And it is right in town.

This is a warehouse sort of building, with big spaces and garage doors.  But it also has a comfortable office room, and even the open spaces have been recently developing into … well, not exactly beauty, but certainly a brightly pleasant spot.  That’s because a gang of volunteers, led by femme-with-flair Murielle MacDonald, has been busy with the paint sandy brown, forest green, mossy taupe and sunshine yellow.

How is it possible that ACT has a building?  Because of Terry.  He has purchased this building and made a special arrangement for ACT to be the (phenomenally under-charged) tenant for the foreseeable future.  That’s the generosity part.  Beyond that, though as he has been for most of our shows and many other activities over the past half-decade Terry has been the stimulus, the person who got us thinking about what we should be doing, the guy who so often has looked ahead, picked up the ball, and called for the rest of us to pitch in and make things happen.

Well, a big thing is happening now … ACT has a home.  And we are all so very grateful to Terry Pratt for it.  A great big Thank You, Terry.

* Beach House??!  No, we’re not talking about limpid water lapping the golden sand under the gently swaying palm fronds.  This is The Beach House because of its being on Beach Street in behind the Civic Centre off Kensington Road.
