ACT Presents Noises Off

Gail Moore’s review of Noises Off from the Buzz

December 1996—ACT (a community theatre) recently staged the British comedy Noises Off, written by Michael Frayn, at the Carrefour de I’isle-Saint-Jean. Directed by David Sherren, the play featured the talented cast of Barbara Rhodenhizer, Ben Kinder, Tim Mosse, Jennifer Long, Kim Gillis, Ed Rashed, Sara Fraser, Greg Stapleton and Gerry Gray. Each cast member faced the difficult task of playing two roles in this piece about a British acting troupe performing a play called Nothing On.

Re:ACTion - The Editor’s Column

It is quite a while since our last edition so I suppose everyone will be expecting this to be stuffed with lots of juicy tit-bits.  Well… Some of us have been enjoying the summer far too much to have given more than a passing thought to the newsletter. However, well refreshed, we should be able to produce something worth reading. (If it’s not up to your taste, don’t blame me!)

Terry Pratt has taken up the reins as our Director of Theatre and, along with his committee, has put a program together for the upcoming year. Look for his interesting article outlining his job description later in the newsletter.

Production kicks off with Michael Frayn’s Noises Off, directed by David Sherren and performed at the Carrefour. Next on the production bill is Hank Stinson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses performed at the MacKenzie Theatre during the week between Christmas and New Year - just when the kids are driving you crazy and you can only take in so many Disney movies! The big news is that in May we undertake a production of Gilbert and SuIlivan’s HMS Pinafore. An encouraging turnout of G&S aficionados came for the August reading and sing-through. Owen Aylward has agreed to be Musical Director, Helen MacRae will accompany rehearsals and Terry Pratt direct.  Auditions will be in December, with rehearsals starting in January. All in all, we will have a busy and varied season. - Valerie

It’s Miller Time

Sean McQuaid’s review of The Crucible from the Buzz

April 1996— To quote Papa Smurf: “Amazing. Simply Amazing!” Darned if I can remember the last time a community theatrical production inspired such interest hereabouts. People were lined up to see Arthur Miller’s The Crucible long before the doors opened at the MacKenzie Theatre, by which time advance sales had already guaranteed a run of packed houses - even encore performances, which sold out as well! ACT (a community theatre) deserves a round of applause for what may be their most successful production yet.

Re:ACTion - The Editor’s Column

One Year! In a little more than one year ACT has grown from an idea to a vibrant, ever growing organization that is reaching out to touch more and more people. It is encouraging to see how we are all learning and growing with each experience. The recent box office success with The Crucible is a measure of what we have learned about marketing (see Rob Thomson’s article on publicity), and with each production many people are expanding their experiences in different directions. It is exciting to be involved with such an enthusiastic bunch of people committed to a common cause.

For those who are new members, or even thinking of becoming a member, the monthly play readings are a great way to make a start without a major commitment. The selection of plays is varied and you can even request your own favourite. Last month’s choice was an exciting one - a brand new, as yet unseen, script by Hank Stinson of Young Master Davie, adapted from Dicken’s David Copperfield. And to make it even more exciting, Helen MacCrae was there to introduce us to the music.

Looking forward to seeing you all the Annual General Meeting. - the editor
